Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Ruth was a small toddler when her father who was employed as a carnival barker died. The mother of the family had to work in jobs like waitressing, cleaning and washing. Ruth attended the school in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. She left the institution she was in within two years of her education in order to pursue a career as an actor. This was not an easy path to take. Although she got an opportunity at a theatre in New York posing as a still for a mystery magazine however, there were no theatre opportunities that came her way. She then worked as the hat checker in a night club before calling it quits and returning to Boston. In Boston, when she worked at evening as an actor for the New England Repertory Company and the rest of the time she was an usherette. She also studied drama and ultimately graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
